Professional Development

Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) and other natural resource agencies and organizations offer professional development opportunities for educators.

Project Learning Tree

There are numerous forestry and conservation resources available for professional development of educators through Project Learning Tree.

Teaching Trees

Another professional development opportunity is Teaching Trees, a two-day training for middle and high school teachers, designed to further their knowledge of local forestry. It includes training in Project Learning Tree, a tour of local working forests, and field activities teachers can use with students. Topics include sustainable local forestry, tree identification, forest ecology, and forest products. Workshops are supported by Virginia Forestry Education Foundation and are offered each summer in Louisa County, Carroll County, and Newport News.
